Photo supplied Niem Chheng | The Phnom Penh Post  Publication date 07 March 2018 | 17:31 ICT Convicted former Khmer Power Party head Sourn Serey Ratha was denied bail today after his hearing at the Appeal Court. The party leader was sentenced to five years imprisonment in August last year for allegedly inciting soldiers to disobey orders in a Facebook post in which he said that the conflict between Laos and Cambodia would only harm rank-and-file soldiers, while generals could safely enjoy their “money” and “girls”. “The reasons I would like to ask for bail is that I did not commit anything that causes public insecurity, or makes the society chaotic,” he said in the hearing today. “My mother is seriously ill and my wife looks after my two kids alone. My father-in-law is critically ill, he has to change blood very often,” Serey Rat...

Rainsy: PM should step down

Mr Rainsy confirms forced regime change ideals. KT/Mai Vireak May Titthara / Khmer Times, March 7, 2018 Following Prime Minister Hun Sen’s adamant refusal to meet with him, exiled former opposition leader Sam Rainsy said the premier has only two options: step down now or be forced to step down in the near future. Mr Rainsy has lived in exile since 2015 after being hit with slew of court cases, including by Mr Hun Sen, who accused him of defamation. Mr Rainsy said on social media yesterday following an interview with Radio Free Asia that Mr Hun Sen’s first option was to “voluntarily step down now, after negotiating a safe exit with the Cambodia National Rescue Movement and the international community.” If not, according to Mr Rainsy, the premier would be forced to step down in the near future “when the situation becomes untenable for him because of the growing anger of the population backed by a large portion of the armed forces on the one hand, and increasing international pressure and...

Ministry bans fake monks, other beggars, from seeking donations in public places

Kimberley McCosker Kong Meta | The Phnom Penh Post Publication date 07 March 2018 | 18:22 ICT A beggar receives money from a pedestrian near Phnom Penh's Royal Palace in 2014. Heng Chivoan The Ministry of Social Affairs has issued a new directive banning people “dressed” as monks and nuns, as well as groups using children, the elderly or disabled, from begging in public places. The announcement applies to Cambodians and foreigners involved in soliciting such donations, and the ministry has asked local authorities and the public to report such activity to the ministry. “These activities affect the public order,” says the directive, which was issued on March 1 and signed by Minister Vong Soth. It further says such begging affects the reputation and dignity of the people as well as that of th...

Takeo man suspected of murdering his wife

Noun Sophal, 31, was charged with the murder of his wife, who gave birth to their small child six weeks ago, in Takeo province’s Tram Kak district. Fresh News Kong Meta | The Phnom Penh Post Publication date 07 March 2018 | 08:51 ICT A 31-year-old man was yesterday charged with the murder of his wife in Takeo’s Tram Kak district. The case comes after a spate of domestic murders over the past several weeks. In many cases, commune authorities were found to have knowledge of ongoing abuse but failed to act to protect the victims from escalating violence. Noun Sophal, an assistant taxi driver, took his 32-year-old wife, Bou Sourn, to Ang Tasom Commune Health Centre on Sunday, claiming she had fallen ill. Police suspect Sourn, the mother of a 6-week-old baby, was dead on arrival. Tram Kak Deputy District Police Chief Sok Sokchea said she had multiple bruises and scars on her face and body. “I thought the wife already passed away, but he pretended like his wife was just very sick,” Sokch...

Beehive party founder Sonando set to rejoin politics after blessing from Hun Sen

Mam Sonando greets opposition supporters at a post-election rally at Phnom Penh’s Freedom Park in 2013. Charlotte Pert Mech Dara and Erin Handley | The Phnom Penh Post Publication date 07 March 2018 | 06:58 ICT Veteran political figure Mam Sonando has signalled he will once again take the reins of his Beehive Social Democratic Party just months out from Cambodia’s national elections, in a move critics say undermines democracy and plays into a skewed ruling- party narrative of a multiparty system. The move followed a Friday speech by Prime Minister Hun Sen – in which he affectionately referred to Sonando as “Grandfather Do” – encouraging the 76-year-old to re-enter the political fray. Just over two months ago, Sonando had said from overseas that he feared falling victim to a politicised arrest – his fourth – over the same purported “treason” case that saw opposition Kem Sokha jailed last year amid ongoing political tensions. Saying he was now back in Phnom Penh, Sonando yesterday vo...

REUTERS/Samrang Pring Kann Vicheika, VOA | 07 March 2018 Hun Sen quoted the letter as saying that some of the 118 Cambodia National Rescue Party politicians banned from politics for five years after the party was dissolved in November had asked him for their “rights back”. PHNOM PENH — Prime Minister Hun Sen has claimed that members of the country’s banned opposition party have sent letters to his office requesting they be allowed to return to politics. At a ceremony at a pagoda in Phnom Penh on Tuesday, Hun Sen said the authors of the letters, whom he did not name, had had their requests turned down. He quoted the letter as saying that some of the 118 Cambodia National Rescue Party politicians banned from politics for five years after the party was dissolved in November had asked him for their “rights back”. He said the CNRP had attempted t...
