Officials in Cambodia and Thailand have inked an agreement to open a new border crossing that will help speed up the transfer of patients seeking emergency treatment.

The new checkpoint is scheduled to open in November.

Officials from Banteay Meanchey province and their counterparts across the Thai border in Sa Kaeo province agreed on the development of the patient transportation border cross system in Prey Chan village in O’Chrou district on the Cambodian side of the border, according to a statement from the Thursday meeting. A committee under the guidance of the governors in Banteay Meanchey and Sa Kaeo provinces will determine how to accelerate the patient transport.

Dr Keo Sopheaktra, director of the Banteay Meanchey Provincial Health Department, said patients currently are transferred into another ambulance at the border. While Cambodian officials have asked Thailand to allow Cambodian ambulances to go directly to hospitals on the Thai side, those requests had been rejected.

Representatives of the Thai government did not respond to requests for comment.

Holocaust Museum rescinds Elie Wiesel Award to Nobel winner Aung San Suu Kyi

Aung San Suu Kyi was for decades Myanmar's symbol of democracy but has come under heavy criticism for her refusal to stand up for the Muslim Rohingya. (AFP/THET AUNG) The Washington Post, March 7, 2018 The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum announced Wednesday that it is rescinding the Elie Wiesel Award — its highest honor — it gave in 2012 to Aung San Suu Kyi, the Burmese political leader and Nobel laureate, saying military crimes against the Muslim Rohingya minority “demand that you use your moral authority to address this situation.” The Muslim Rohingya minority of Burma. image BBC The announcement, posted on the museum’s website, comes as calls are becoming louder and louder for Suu Kyi, once a towering human rights hero, to speak out. She is seen as the power behind President Htin Kyaw, a close friend and ally. Prevented by Burmese law from running for political office, she holds the title of state counselor and foreign minister. The museum posted its March 6 letter to Suu Kyi, se...
